Review: Cinderella at The Epstein Theatre
Review by Kathryn Hayden
Liverpool is completely spoilt for choice with Christmas Pantos and last night I went along to watch Regal Entertainments’ debut Panto at The Epstein Theatre.
Whilst it’s their first Panto here, they have held the tenancy for St Helens Theatre Royal for around 20 years so are well versed in Panto folklore.
There’s a very strong cast including Sammy Winward as Cinderella who is best known for playing Katie Sugden in Emmerdale. Sammy is endearing as Cinders and there’s lots of musical numbers that allow her to showcase what a strong vocal talent she is too.
The Ugly sisters aren’t played by the traditional panto dames but by two truly professional local female actors, Chrissy Rock and Sarah White.
Sarah is probably best known for her role of Bev McLoughlin in C4 soap Brookside. She plays the role perfectly although she did mean and cruel so well, I’m slightly worried for her real children at home!
Benidorm’s Chrissy Rock joins her and the interaction between the two is hilarious with brilliant comedic timing.
Lewis Devine works tirelessy as Buttons, the lovable scamp. His energy and enthusiasm abound throughout the show and I’m tired just watching him. He interacts well with the audience and even presents them with a bit of a surprise which I’m not going to spoil by revealing. But do watch out!
Andrew Geater, who is also Manager and Assistant Director for Regal Entertainments, has a long list of theatre credits to his name and plays the handsome Prince Charming. He has good stage presence and gives a strong vocal performance.
Warren Donnelly (C4’s Shameless) and Samantha Palin complete this talented cast as Dandini and the Fairy Godmother.
This Panto is a stylish mix of traditional story combined with fresh ideas and up to date references, a great set design with a spectacular 3D section in Act 2, fabulous costumes, superb dance routines by a talented ensemble and tons of singing by cast and audience.
If all the talk of Brexit and the General Election is getting you down, get yourself off into town where you can ‘Boo’ to your hearts content, stamp your feet and fill your hearts full of Christmas cheer!
