One of Africa’s most inventive and distinctive singer-songwriters’ returns to Liverpool this May

Described as having the tenderly subversive touch of Bon Iver, the haunting falsetto of Skip James, the razor-like mind of Akala, and the inventiveness of Moses Sumney, Cameroonian singer-songwriter, Blick Bassy returns to Liverpool for an intimate show in the Philharmonic Music Room this May.

Bassy was born in 1974 and grew up in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. He came to appreciate his cultural heritage after being sent to live with his grandparents from the age of ten, learning about the Bassa culture of his ancestors. At 17, he formed his first band, Jazz Crew, following it with Macase in 1996.

His debut solo album, Léman (which means “mirror”), was released in 2009. Two years later, after relocating to Cantin, a small village in Northern France, he returned with Hongo Calling. In 2015, Bassy delivered his third full-length album and first for France’s No Format label, Akö.

In the slipstream of the acclaimed Akö, Blick Bassy delivers 1958, a defiant tribute to the heroes who fought and died for the independence of his native Cameroon. Its focus is specific, but its themes – the bondage of neo-colonialism, the for heroes, the relevance of history and the search for the true identity – are universal.

Blick Bassy plays Liverpool’s Philharmonic Music Room on Monday 25th May, 2020 and tickets are on sale now. Profits go towards Africa Oyé – registered charity 1062484 – and will keep the annual Africa Oyé festival free entry and open to all.
