Eight members of Liverpool’s North West Spirit Taekwondo team bring home 19 medals!
Eight members of Liverpool’s North West Spirit Taekwondo team recently brought home 19 medals – and several World titles – to the city after representing England at the World ITF Taekwondo Championships in Scotland. It was a tough tournament, with a high standard of competition; but the Liverpool fighters rose to the challenge and returned with 11 gold, 5 silver & 3 bronze medals.
9-year-old red belt, Owen Gargan, gave an impressive performance to become treble World Champion. He achieved a hat-trick of gold medals after taking the top spot in sparring, team sparring and high kick events. He also achieved a bronze medal in patterns.
Blue belt, Kaden Springer (9), became double World Champion. He dominated each of his bouts with a series of swift head kicks to take well-deserved gold medals in sparring and team sparring.
9-year-old Nikola Kliza was one of the top performers in the girls’ green belt category. She demonstrated a high standard of technical ability to earn a silver medal in the patterns event. She then went on to win several bouts of sparring, taking the top spot on the podium as World Champion.
15-year-old Alan Johnson gave a solid performance in the boys’ red belt division, fighting hard to take the gold medal in sparring.
Connor Murphy (15) put up a determined fight in the boys’ black belt sparring category, ending up with a silver medal after a very close final match. He carried over his determination into the team sparring event, where he stayed strong against tough opposition and was delighted to eventually win the gold medal.
15-year-old Callum Edwards won two hard-earned gold medals in sparring and team sparring. He took on several top fighters with an onslaught of head kicks, leaving no doubt in the umpires’ minds that he deserved to be crowned World Champion.
In the ladies’ black belt division, Stef Davies (37) achieved a gold medal in sparring, as well as two silver medals in team sparring and patterns. Teammate Sandra Baldwin (45) brought home three medals, taking silver in team sparring and winning bronze medals in patterns and sparring.
The Liverpool team is now back in training, working towards further success at upcoming tournaments.
