Save The Date For Run For The 96 2020 – Saturday 16 May 2020

The sixth annual Run For The 96 5K community legacy fun run will return this Spring as organisers confirm this year’s date.

Run For The 96 is a community legacy event to celebrate the lives of the 96 Liverpool Football Club fans who tragically lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989.

The event also strives to remember the families of The 96 and the survivors, who have tirelessly fought for justice with the utmost dignity.

This year’s Run For The 96 5K will take place on Saturday 16 May 2020 in Stanley Park – a fitting event location between the home grounds of Liverpool Football Club’s Anfield Stadium and Everton Football Club’s Goodison Park.

The 5K will start at 9.30am, followed at 11am by a 1 Mile fun run.

The 5K route takes runners through Stanley Park, along Walton Lane, Priory Road, Arkles Lane and Anfield Road, before passing the Eternal Flame on 96 Avenue at Anfield Stadium, where many runners pause to take a moment to pay their respects at the Hillsborough Memorial.

The course also runs alongside Goodison Park, to recognise the support given to the Hillsborough families by Everton Football Club.

Run For The 96 continues to have the support of the Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG).

The event was first staged in April 2015 to honour and remember The 96 – and has since raised £25,000 for charity through its participants fundraising efforts.

This year’s official beneficiaries are Jamie Carragher’s 23 Foundation; LFC Foundation; Everton in the Community; and Stanley Park Liverpool CIC. Together, they support the vision of creating a legacy event to honour The 96 while ensuring local communities benefit. BTR Liverpool organise and deliver the event.

Participants must pre-register and are encouraged to fundraise. All monies raised by participants or donated will be split equally between the four beneficiaries – this year’s official fundraising page is now live and can be found by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/runforthe962020

Run For The 96 entry fee covers costs to stage and deliver all aspects of the event, including race numbers, medals, T-shirts, event set-up, and safety measures.

The 5K runners will receive a bespoke red or blue event T-shirt to wear on the day and a commemorative finishers’ medal. The 1 Mile entrants will receive a finishers’ medal.

BTR Race Director Alan Rothwell commented:

“Run For The 96 5K is a very special family friendly event. When we were asked to create a community legacy event to celebrate the lives of The 96 and remember their families and the survivors, we knew it would be something extraordinary.

“The event provides a platform for participants to honour The 96 while fundraising for incredibly important charities who provide vital outreach services in their communities. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the sixth annual Run For The 96 on Saturday 16 May – let’s make it a day to remember.”

A virtual run option is also available to enable runners take part wherever they are in the world. Virtual participants are sent a race pack in advance which includes a race number, T-shirt and medal. Last year, 200 Liverpool fans virtually took part across the world.
